I came across a British show on Youtube called "Back In Time For Dinner." You follow a family as they literally go back in time for dinner. Their kitchen, living room and dining room is transformed into different eras. The Robshaw family travels through the 50s, 60, 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s. They dress, eat and behave like the people from each specific era. I found this show intriguing. This family chose to endure an experiment that takes them through 50 years of food and culture.
I began watching the episode surrounded by the 50s. The Robshaw family's kitchen was transformed into a kitchen from the 50's. Decked out with 1950s wallpaper and kitchen machinery. I watched as the wife and their two daughters tried to make dinner for the family. During the early 1950s their was still an immense amount of food rationing due to the war. You were only able to get so much of everything and because of that wives had to get creative.
What I also found interesting was the dynamic between wife and husband. The husband went to work all day and came home expecting dinner on the table. They did not help clean up or make the meal. That was not the "man's job." The difference in roles were very extreme. The fact that the husband sat back while the wife cleaned, cooked and took care of the children made me laugh. It felt absurd to watch. Society has come a long way since the 1950s.
I'm going to continue watching the rest of the show and I encourage you to do the same. I'm not only watching an entertaining show but I'm learning about the culture of the time. I was born in the late 1950s and my childhood was really during the 60s and 70s. I'm interested to see what I remember and don't remember from those eras.

Zappos "I'm not a box" Campaign
I ordered a pair of shoes from Zappos and opened my door Thursday afternoon to find a box sitting on my front steps. I took it inside and cut it open to not only find my new pair of shoes but to see that Zappos has changed their box. I examined the different ways the pattern twists and turns directing you on how to change the box into a creative master piece. I decided to do some more research on their new design because it seemed like more than just a marketing ploy.
Zappos has an entire website dedicated to their new box. Before you can enter the site there is a poem for you to read. It says:
"I solemnly swear to:
Think twice and get really creative...
By building and tearing and staying elated.
With my cardboard, my creation will surely inspire...
Myself to discover my life's biggest desires.
I promise to open up and look inside...
To see myself and the world with a fresh set of eyes.
This will remind me to dream and never fear to explore...
This box, after all, is so much more.
I will share this at least once or, if desired, a lot...
So the world, together, can say #imnotabox."
In order to enter the site you have to click one of two options. Either "I agree whole heartedly" or "no way, I'm definitely a box." I chose the first option.
That opened up the portal to find out more about Zappos new campaign.
"Whether it's providing shoes to cushion your baby's first steps, protecting those feet for your very first marathon, or dressing you in a stunning outfit for your first date--there is one thing that connects all of these moments: our Zappos box."
The new Zappos box is allowing you to express your creativity.
The about page ended with this paragraph that basically sums up what life is all about:
"It's time to unleash your creativity and uniqueness for good and reintroduce it to the world. We want you in the end to say, I'm not a box."

Patagonia's New Natural Rubber Wetsuits
As I was skimming through my mail last week I came across a Patagonia magazine. Inside it there was a little pamphlet that said "we grow our own." Inside there was a picture with tons of wetsuits hanging up on a rack and a paragraph explaining how Patagonia has made the "world's first neoprene-free wetsuits."
According to the pamphlet making neoprene suits in factories consumes a large amount of energy. Patagonia has replaced neoprene in their wetsuits with natural rubber tapped from hevea trees. By doing this Patagonia is reducing carbon dioxide emissions "by up to 80% in the manufacturing process." Their rubber is "sourced from a plantation that is Forest Stewardship Council certified by the Rainforest Alliance-meaning the trees aren't planted on newly clear-cut rainforest, like some of the world's supply and biodiversity and workers' rights are protected."
The Yulex method removes over 99% of impurities from the rubber. Patagonia has changed their entire range of wetsuits to renewable natural rubber. "After 60 years of neoprene dependency, it's high time to set surfing free."

The Giant Panda Has Been Renamed As Vulnerable Creatures
The giant panda has been on the endangered species list for many years but they have recently been renamed as "vulnerable" creatures. The pandas "have seen a 17 percent surge in population numbers in the decade ending in 2014, largely due to conservation efforts in their native China. The most recent panda census counted 1,864 of the animals, excluding those below a certain age threshold. If you include cubs, that number approaches 2,060."
The International Union for Conservation of Nature warned that the decrease in bamboo due to climate change could stress the giant pandas. Bamboo is their main source of food and "if the phenomenon continues unabated, nearly a third of the world's bamboo habitat could disappear in the next 80 years."
The World Wildlife Fund was very happy to hear that China has made so many conservation efforts. The fund's logo has been a panda since 1961.
The World Wildlife Fund director general Marco Lambertini said "The recovery of the panda shows that when science, political will and engagement of local communities come together, we can save wildlife and also improve biodiversity."

National Wildlife Day
National Wildlife Day was founded in 2005. It's a day that brings "awareness to the number of endangered animals nationally, as well as globally, that need to be preserved and rescued from their demise each year and also to acknowledge zoos and outstanding animal sanctuaries and organizations globally for everything they do to help preserve this planet's animals and educate the public about conservation."
Colleen Paige founded National Wildlife Day in March 2005. Later on she changed the date to September 4 to honor the memory of Steve Irwin. She is a "Pet Lifestyle Expert, Animal Advocate, Conservationist, Animal Behaviorist, Author and founder of a myriad of other animal related holidays such as National Dog Day and National Cat Day to bring public awareness to the plight of animals around the globe."

Too Good To Go App
There is an abundance of food waste in the world. Perfectly good food is being thrown into trashcans everyday. Sandwiches, french fries, vegetables and more are all being tossed into the garbage at the end of the day because restaurants didn't use it.
Too Good To Go is an app that is stopping food waste.
This is how it works:
You download the app.
Order from a restaurant or cafe.
You will receive a time when you can pick up your meal.
Go to the restaurant and show your order confirmation.
Pick up your food and dig in.
"Too Good To Go is a hyper-local environment social enterprise dedicated to reducing food waste. Through the Too Good To Go app and website you can order delicious food from local restaurants, cafes and bakeries, collect it up to an hour before closing time and enjoy on-the-go in an environmentally-friendly TGTG sugarcane box. We're all about feeling good whilst eating well!"
Too Good To Go was founded in Denmark in 2015. The app was launched in Brighton and Leeds in 2016. "As of August 2016, Too Good To Go has foundations in six different countries. In the space of barely six months we've helped prevent approximately over 200 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and provided thousands of meals tat would have otherwise been discarded to those in need."
This app is genius. Restaurants and cafes are able to make new meals out of the food that would normally be wasted and thrown in the garbage. Too Good To Go is allowing restaurants to provide great food and prevent food waste.

The Summer Olympics Are Changing Due To Climate Change
Could this years Summer Olympics be the last? CNN came out with an article titled Will Climate Change Stop The Summer Olympics? The article explained that "only eight cities outside of Western Europe would be viable places to host the Games by 2085, according to a new study in The Lancet."
The article in The Lancet explained that "increasing restrictions on when, where and how the Games can be held owing to extreme heat are a sign of a much bigger problem."
Other cities around the world with higher temperatures would have to cancel outdoor events.
UC Berkeley professor Kirk Smith said "if you're going to be spending billions of dollars to host an event, you're going to want have a level of certainty that you're not going to have to cancel it at the last minute."
This year around 70% of the athletes finished the U.S. Olympic Marathon Team Trials in Los Angeles where the temperatures were the highest on record. According to the new study endurance events would be the "first casualty of higher temperatures-they require a lot of space, so they're usually held outside." The study used temperatures and humidity to "predict in which cities it would be the most risky to host the Summer Games outdoors using the marathon as a test case."
The study focused on cities in the Northern Hemisphere because it's home to 90% of the population.
Climate Change has been seeping deeper and deeper into our thoughts, into our news outlets and now into our Olympic games. It's time to make a change in how we view the Earth. It's important that we all make an effort to make a positive change in the Environment.
